The ministry of works and transport has emphasized on the role of using digital number plates which aims at protecting Ugandans and their property through improved vehicles and motorcycle tracking.
While Speaking at a press conference held at La shalom hotel yesterday in Mbale City ,Susan Kataike, the Head of Communications at the Ministry of Works and Transport, noted that president directed for all motorcycles and vehicles across the country to have digital number plates due to the high criminality in transport sector such as the robbery of motorcycles and killing Boda Boda riders among others.
She said Gov't started implementing the use of digital number plates in November Last year and so far over 2000 Government vehicles have digital number plates.
In 2024, Government working with private dealers started installing digital number plates on New motorcycles and in January 6th 2025, Government will continue with the same on motor vehicles.
Kataike also revealed that the use of intelligent transport monitoring system is a complete solution that is made to change transport sector specifically the vehicles and motorcycles.
"Currently Uganda has over 2 million vehicles,but when these cars gets accidents,where does such number plates goes, wrongdoers have been using such number plates to make crimes,now with the science in digital number plates,this will help to know anyone tampering with it and sends signal to police headquarters in Naguru"kataike said.
Erick Rutakirwa the representative from virtue global security highlighted that the systems works to incorporate the security camera and real time-data transmission to detect and track criminal activity.
The Government of Uganda, in partnership with Joint Stock "Virtual Global Security Company has launched the operationalization of Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) project which looks at boosting road safety and security.
