The Member of Parliament for Gogonyo County in Pallisa district, Honorable Derrick Orone, has called on residents to reject violence, intimidation, and conflict-driven politics as campaigns for the forthcoming Local Council One (LC1) elections gather momentum.
Speaking to our reporter, Hon.Orone warned that rising political tensions and the spread of misinformation could undermine peace and social cohesion if citizens fail to embrace peaceful participation in the electoral process.
The legislator urged voters, candidates, and their supporters to conduct peaceful campaigns and maintain harmony regardless of their political affiliations. He reminded aspiring leaders that elections are temporary and should never be allowed to divide families or communities.
"Political competition should not become a source of hatred or violence. After elections, we all remain members of the same communities and must continue living together peacefully," Orone said.
The MP also expressed concern over reports that some candidates intend to form youth brigades and other informal groups to provide security for their supporters during campaigns and to guard votes and election results at village polling stations on polling day.
According to Honorable Orone, the individuals behind the proposed groups claim they no longer trust state security agencies, particularly the Uganda Police Force, alleging that the force is either biased or unprepared to guarantee security during the lower local government elections.
He cautioned that such actions could heighten tensions and create unnecessary confrontations during the electoral process.
Hon.Orone emphasized that the responsibility for providing security during elections lies solely with the Uganda Police Force, as mandated by law. He noted that the police are responsible for maintaining law and order throughout all electoral activities, including the ongoing Special Interest Group elections and the upcoming LC1 polls.
Hon. Derrick Orone also serves as the NRM Caucus Publicity Secretary, Vice Chairperson of Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries.
