The president of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged locals to plant more trees as a way of conserving the environment.
International environmental day was organized by National Environment Management authority under the theme "Land restoration for climate resilience".
These remarks were made by Robina Nabbanja the prime minister of Uganda while reading the message of the president on Wednesday during international environmental day celebration which was held at Mafudu primary school play ground, Mafudu sub county in Sironko district.
According to Museveni, Uganda is experiencing climatic changes every day due to people continuing cutting down of trees and encroachment on natural resources.
He says that people must embrace tree planting in their areas as away of averting such climate changes.
Beatrice Anywar the Minister of environment says that government under National Forestry Authority (NFA) has embarked on distribution of free bamboo seedlings to All districts in mountainous areas.
She says that they want bamboo to be planted and hold soil to avoid land slides and flash floods.
Asha Nabulo Lumolo the woman member of parliament NRM flagger Bearer Sironko district appreciated the president and his government on Environmental mitigation Programs but in twenty years to come the country most especially Bugisu region might be affected with hunger due to drought caused by cutting down of trees.
Lumolo adds that she has a plan of supplying academia tree species seedlings in this year to people of Sironko as away of improving on trees planting and environmental conservation.
She urged district environmental offices to start sensitizing the public about dangers of cutting down trees without replacement and destroying the wetlands to save the environment.
Nathan Nandala Mafabi member of parliament representing Budadiri West constituency in Sironko district says that people are cutting down trees for fuel due to high traffics of electricity and gas which they can use for cooking.
He urged government to reduce costs of electricity and gas such that people can leave the habit of cutting down trees.
