The development followed a tip off to police by residents of a ball-like device suspected to be a bomb that had been abandoned by an unknown person.

According to area residents, an unknown man was seen  giving a Christmas gift fastened with a phone to a commercial sex worker in Kataba trading centre  which turned out to be an IED.

In a swift response to a potential threat, police successfully detonated the explosive device without causing any harm.

“At around 10:30pm I was approached by residents about a suspected device abandoned in Kataba area. We called police which intervened rapidly and exploded the device,” the area defence secretary, Ramathan Ajaga said.

According to the Makindye division Mayor, Kasirye Mulyanyama, such incidents lend credence to increased insecurity and recklessness.

Patrick Onyango, the  Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson  said the planted device was successfully detonated in the wee hours of the night with no human injury registered.

He urged the public to continuously and collectively report any suspicious activities or objects to ensure the safety of the community.

According to Peace Amaro, a commercial worker who this website spoke to, her friend Maria Musudan was approached by an unknown customer putting on black and after business, he left behind a gift in a black pack fastened to a phone.

“The gift package was giving lights and a warning. It  is for that reason that I and my friend Anderson Mukundane advised her to drop the gift and distance herself from it,” she said.

Musudan however denied having an affair with the suspect who handed her the explosive device .
