Hon. Mariam Mukhaye, Woman Member of Parliament Mbale District, has warned Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) enforcement team to stop torturing locals on the slopes of Mt. Elgon National Park.
Hon. Mukhaye revealed that recently UWA made an operation that left one person dead identified as Musa and others sustained injuries in Bushiyi Parish, Wanale Subcounty, Mbale District.
Hon.Mukhaye said that over the years Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has continued to destroy crops and killed many locals on the slopes of Mt. Elgon National Park.
Mukhaye said several families in Wanale Subcounty and other areas neighbouring the park have lost their crops and loved ones during UWA operations.
The legislator urged government to intervene and find a lasting solution to the long-standing conflict between UWA and the community to prevent further loss of lives.
"UWA stop your nuisance of torturing locals on their land," Mukhaye quoted.
The legislator said locals have lived on their ancestral land for many years and should not be harassed in the name of conservation.
She called upon UWA leadership to engage the community peacefully and respect human rights while carrying out its operations.
