Police are holding nine youths in connection with the suspected murder of a 19-year-old man during Independence Day celebrations in Toroma Sub-county, Katakwi District.
The incident happened on Saturday morning after a fight broke out among groups of youths at a popular entertainment centre known as Omain Jamaica in Akurao Parish, Toroma Sub-county.
The deceased has been identified as George William Opolot, a resident of Akurao in Toroma Sub-county.
According to the Toroma Sub-county LCIII Chairperson, John Bosco Orani, the incident followed a disagreement between two groups of youths from Olupe and Akurao parishes over who should leave with two girls who were at the entertainment centre, leading to a fight.
He says Opolot, who is believed not to have been directly involved in the scuffle, was caught up in the violence and later died.
Orani says this is not the first incident of its kind in the area, attributing the increasing violence among youths to drug and substance abuse.
He has called on parents to take responsibility for guiding their children, saying parents should closely monitor their children's behaviour, advise them and discipline them when necessary.
Meanwhile, the Katakwi District LCV Chairperson, Geoffrey Omolo, has urged parents to teach their children good morals and warn them against drug and substance abuse.
Omolo says the community must work together to prevent young people from engaging in activities that could lead to violence and loss of lives.
In a separate incident on the same day, Francis Ongiroi, a resident of Oidotongor Village in Osuguro Parish, Kapujan Sub-county, was reportedly killed in suspected mob justice.
However, police has not yet released any report on the incidents as the nine suspects remain in police custody.
