The Spiritual Leader of the Jewish community in Uganda, Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of West Africa, Rabbi Gershom Sizomu Wambedde, has called for togetherness and unity among the Abayudaya as they prepare to enter the Jewish New Year "Rosh Hashanah".
Rabbi Sizomu Made the call while addressing the congregation today during the Holy Shabbat prayers at Nabugoye Synagogue in Northern City division, Mbale City.
He said as the Jewish community enters the new year in their calendar, it is important for all Abayudaya to forgive each other and stay united as one family.
"As we are about to enter Rosh Hashanah, the head of the year in our Jewish calendar, I call upon all Abayudaya to have togetherness and unity. Let us leave behind hatred and work together for development of our community," Rabbi Sizomu said.
He however urged all members of the Abayudaya Jewish community to put on white clothes as they enter the new year.
"White symbolizes purity, peace and a new beginning. As we enter Rosh Hashanah, everyone should put on white to show that we have cleansed our hearts before God," he added.
Rosh Hashanah, which marks the Jewish New Year, is one of the holiest days on the Jewish calendar and is celebrated with prayers, blowing of the Shofar and reflection.
The Chairman of Abayudaya Nabugoye Synagogue, Aaron Galandi who attended the Shabbat service welcomed the message of unity.
Galandi emphasized that the Jewish community should always respect and honor the synagogue.
He said the synagogue is a holy place of worship and must be treated with maximum respect by all members.
"The synagogue is the house of God. I emphasize to all our Jewish brothers and sisters to always respect and honor the synagogue. We must keep it clean, maintain discipline and come in decent dress," Galandi said.
He added that respecting the synagogue shows respect to God and to the Jewish faith which has been preserved by the Abayudaya community for over 100 years.
Galandi also asked the youth to protect the synagogue and its property and avoid acts that may tarnish the image of the Abayudaya community.
