DON'T Torment My Voters" - Namisindwa Woman Mp Warns UWA

 

Namisindwa district Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Peace Khalayi, has warned the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) over continued destruction of Crops,beating and killing of locals who graze and farm in Mt. Elgon National Park.

 Hon. Peace Khalayi and LCV Chairperson Namisindwa, Hon. Emma Bwayo yesterday 23rd September ,2026 visited Mukoto and Bupoto Sub-counties assessing the impact of UWA operations done this week following reported confrontations with communities near the National Park.

‎Residents say crops and properties in over 54 villages have been destroyed, while UWA says it is enforcing the 2018 Cabinet resolution based on 2017 boundary marks.

‎According to locals, the operation has left hundreds of families in distress after their crops were slashed and property destroyed.

‎Hon. Khalayi ,Bwayo Emma Lcv chairperson and other leaders,who toured the affected villages, condemned the manner in which the operation was conducted, saying it has caused panic and suffering among already vulnerable communities.

‎Khalayi noted that UWA should co-exist with communities around Mt. Elgon National Park instead of harassing them.

‎The legislator said locals have for long been beaten, arrested and in some cases killed while accessing the park area for grazing and farming, which has created fear and tension.

‎She called upon UWA to embrace dialogue and community sensitization rather than force.

‎"UWA should co-exist with communities around Mt. Elgon National Park," she emphasized.

‎Khalayi urged government to clearly demarcate park boundaries and provide alternative livelihoods to communities neighbouring the park to reduce encroachment.
