The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Secretary General, Hon. Fadil Twalla, and who also double as Tingey County Member of Parliament in Kapchwora district has urged locals to embrace afforestation on the slopes of Mt. Elgon including Kapchorwa.
Hon. Twalla said that locals have cut down trees and degraded forests on Mt. Elgon which has caused landslides and floods in both Bugisu and Sebei sub-regions and in a few weeks Uganda might experience heavy rains.
"Every year locals lose lives and properties due to landslides, floods on the slopes of Mt. Elgon," Twalla said.
Twalla noted that continued deforestation and settlement in high-risk zones has worsened the effects of climate change on the mountain
"Locals have cut down trees, degraded forests on Mt. Elgon which has caused landslides, floods in both Bugisu and Sebei Sub-region and in few weeks Uganda might experience heavy rains," Twalla said.
Hon Twalla stressed that office of ministry of Relief, disaster preparedness and refugees under the office of the prime minister should sensitize communities early and support relocation of families living in dangerous spots.
He emphasized that the Bamasaba and Sabiny people should plant more trees and leave risky areas on the slopes of Mt. Elgon to safer areas.
The legislator called upon cultural institutions , religious leaders and local leaders to join efforts in sensitizing communities on environmental conservation and disaster preparedness.
