The vice president (Rtd) Maj Jessica Alupo has called upon leaders from Bugisu sub region to support the development of Mbale Industrial park and harmonize for a good working relations between the investors their workers in order to solve the issue of wages.
By Darius Wabushenda and Isaac. B. While opening the two day sino-uganda Mbale industrial park buy Uganda build Uganda (BUBU) trade show over the weekend, Alupo noted that matters concerning wages should be handled using the channels established between the employer and employees.
She revealed that political leaders have to join the quarterly and annual meetings with investors so that their can bring in their inputs instead of speaking in public which looks like inciting the workers against their employers.
‘’Such situations should not arise because our children are in workshops, they are competent enough to work and we should encourage them to have a positive attitude as we resolve any other outstanding matter”Alupo said.
Evelyn Anite the state minister for investment and privatisation assured the employees at Mbale industrial park for enhancement of their salaries in the near future.
"Many people have been asking me the question of how much are these people paid,but at first we were struggling with how can we create jobs for ugandans "Anite said.
Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives David Bahati narrated the fair as a celebration of the country’s industrialization progress, saying that Uganda now has 8,000 industries, compared to the 83 factories in 1983.
“Today, we are celebrating not just an exhibition but also industrialization and import substitution. Our policy is working, and we will encourage investors to use local raw materials,” Bahati said.
Connie Galiwango the woman member of parliament for Mbale city applauded the investors for creating employment for the youths but however asked them for further negotiation on the issues like increment and improvement working environment.
She also urged the investors to take on the initiative of corporate social responsibility like constructing a school and health centre to the community .
Paul Zhang the chairman of Sino- Uganda Mbale industrial park highlighted that people saying workers are receiving less pay of 6000shilling per day is a lie, revealing that park pays between 9000 to 13000 shilling ugx a day for casual labourers.
He commended the president of Uganda for hospitality and the support always rendered to investors.
The first trade show at sino- Uganda Mbale Industrial park saw over 40 factories showcase in food processing,building,textile, constructions,car spare parts, electronics at discount prices.
