The Consumer Education Trust (CONSENT) Uganda, Non-government Organisation has launched a new campaign dubbed "Bamasaba for Clean Air" in Mbale City to fight against increasing air pollution.
The campaign, launched under the theme "Clean Air for Consumers", aims to sensitize the public on the dangers of air pollution and promote actions that preserve good quality air.
Speaking during the launch at Mbale City centre, the Executive Director of CONSENT Uganda, Mr. Kimera Henry Richard, warned that air pollution is becoming a silent killer in urban areas, affecting mostly consumers, children, and the elderly.
Mr. Kimera said the people of Mbale, especially the Bamasaba community, are facing polluted air due to increased charcoal burning, burning of rubbish, dust from bad roads, deforestation on Mt. Elgon slopes, and emissions from old vehicles.
"As we advocate for good food for our people, we must also advocate for clean air. You cannot enjoy good food when you are breathing dirty air. Air pollution causes respiratory diseases, eye problems and affects our productivity," Kimera said.
He called upon residents to take personal responsibility to preserve the environment for good quality air.
"We urge every household to plant trees, avoid burning garbage, use energy-saving stoves, and stop encroaching on wetlands and forest reserves. Clean air is a consumer right," he emphasized.
The launch was attended by local leaders,Businessmen, Bamasaba cultural leaders and environmental activists who pledged to support the campaign by planting fruit trees and promoting clean cooking methods.
CONSENT Uganda says the campaign will run for some months across Mbale City, Sironko ,Bududa and entire districts of Elgon Sub-region, with radio talk shows, school outreaches and community clean-up exercises.
