Over 2000 pilgrims set off from Bugisu sub region to Namugongo

More than 2000,foot pilgrims from districts of Bududa,Bulambuli,sironko and Mbale among others, today flagged off Heading to Namugongo in wakiso districts to mark uganda martyrs day which is celebrated every year on 3rd June.

During the mass to prepare for the flag-off of foot pilgrims, Fath.Joseph Kibeti Dean of st Austin's catholic church urged pilgrims to stay focused as they walk and pray to God to guide them.

Rev.Tom masette the Sub Dean of st Andrew's Cathedral church Mbale highlighted that Anglican church in this region managed to get 150 pilgrims for Namugongo this year meaning the remaining is from catholic side.

Paul ocha the head  catechist of st Denies catholic church Namatala while speaking to our reporter noted that pilgrims will have four stopover  stations that is Tirinyi,Iganga,Biko and Lugazi before reaching Namugongo.

He advised them not to leave anybody who gets tired on the way but rather helps one another to reach safely.

"They should be very vigilant and follow traffic rules and regulations  while moving on road side's"catechist ocha said.

Wetaka James ,one of the pilgrim from st kizito church in sironko, said he is moving with a lot of faith that God will forgive his sins.

He also prayed for God's blessing for his family and deliverance from the economic challenges he had been undergoing.

Jane Guku also one of the pilgrim revealed that her aim of participating in holy walk is to thank God for enabling her reach 90 years old.

She encouraged youths to always participate in this walks to Namugongo in order to attain God's mercy of living longer.

Uganda Martyrs’ Day commemorates the late 19th-century martyrdom of a group of 23 Anglican and 22 catholic men who were ordered to be put to death between 1985-1987 by the then King of Buganda Kabaka Mwanga II for having converted to Christianity.
