JUST IN : I'll only return to Najja if Amuriat, Mafabi step down - Birigwa

Former national chairman of the Forum for Democratic Change, Wasswa Birigwa, has vowed never to return to the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi even when other members in Katonga where they have taken refuge choose to.

Birigwa says he can only do so only if the leaders accused of betraying the party step down, adding that those who want to go back should go ahead but he can’t return if the issues that caused the split are not resolved.

‘’Those who did wrong should first resign and allow others who are not tainted to move the party forward, but if you are going to remain and say you are right when you know very well that your are wrong, for me I don’t see any reason to sit with you,’’ Birigwa said.

In July last year, Birigwa was forced to flee the FDC party headquarters in the most humiliating of manners, having to scale the perimeter wall fencing to safety. He had been held hostage inside the party offices where he had gone to address the media.

In an interview with our reporter of  this news website, Birigwa said that When they forced him to jump in the party offices it wasn’t intentional but  was saving the party from  goons .

"I went with the party, the heart of the party. The heart, I took it with me that day, and delivered it to the people who own the party, and that’s why I got happy that I was able to do what I did. I don’t even know why God is so good to give me the strength to do what I did, the consistency in my belief.”

Since that dramatic escape from a gang that Birigwa accused FDC secretary general Nandala Mafabi and party president Patrick Amuriat of mobilising, a section of FDC faithful have pitched camp at Katonga Road.

Here, they operate under Dr Kizza Besigye, the party's founding president and Opposition stalwart, who continues to lead a pressure group.

However, there have been rumours that some of the Katonga faction members are soon ending their sabbatical and returning to Najjanankumbi.

But Birigwa says the causes of the party’s division must first be resolved so that he too can look at returning to the new clean leadership.

To him, every politician has a target and most of them want to get party tickets to be voted into positions and get employed.

Birigwa said the Katonga faction is planning to hold a delegates conference to decide on various issues.

The FDC split last year with one side accusing Amuriat and Mafabi of pocketing money from the ruling NRM, allegations that they deny.
