JUST IN : Cecilia Ogwal's body repatriated; Parliament to honour her today

Entebbe International Airport's cargo area was filled with grief on Sunday as Members of Parliament, led by Speaker Anita Among and family members, received the body of the late Dokolo Woman MP, Hon. Cecilia Ogwal.

At the age of 77, Ogwal passed away on Wednesday after a brief hospitalization in India.

President Museveni has granted her an official burial, and a special Parliament sitting has been scheduled for today, Monday, January 22, 2024, in her honor.

Speaker Among, accompanied by Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua, Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, and Sports Minister Peter Ogwang, received the body. Also present were Parliamentary Commissioners Solomon Silwany and Esther Afoyocan.

The late Ogwal's husband, Lameck Ogwal, and other family members accompanied the body.

The profound impact Ogwal had in Parliament was evident as MPs struggled to hold back tears.

"I want to express my sincere gratitude to His Grace Dr. Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, Rt Rev. Prof Alfred Olwa, and all the Ministers of the Word for joining us in prayer for the family and mourners. We will receive Imat at Parliament at 9 am tomorrow and celebrate her legacy and incredible contributions to our country," said Speaker Among.

Following the repatriation, Ogwal's body was taken to Mulago Hospital for a post-mortem examination and embalming. A vigil was held at her home in Bugolobi thereafter.
