NRM legislators demand adherence to the Kyankwanzi resolution

In a decisive move, NRM legislators are urging the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of their party to honour the Kyankwanzi resolution, maintaining the process for selecting three backbench commissioners through a vote.

Expressing concern over the overwhelming interest from over 200 legislators for the limited three commissioner positions, sources within the NRM Caucus suggest a lack of confidence in the current Commissioners of Parliament.

Government Chief Whip Hamson Denis Obua initiated the call for expressions of interest in November, leading to a flood of applications for key parliamentary roles.

However, the sheer volume of interest in the commissioner positions has sparked a debate within the party.

"The Kyankwanzi resolution is a fundamental aspect of our internal democratic processes. We must respect the voices of our legislators in choosing their representatives," warned a prominent NRM lawmaker.

Despite the push from NRM legislators, some opposition members argue against sacrificing current commissioners, citing financial constraints faced by the commission.

The impending decision rests with the NRM CEC, which is expected to consider the multitude of applications and decide the fate of the three backbench commissioner positions.

"We should be cautious not to compromise the efficiency of the commission, especially given the current challenges with limited funds," remarked an opposition legislator.

The term of office for the current Parliament Commissioners and Leadership of standing Committees expired with the 11th Parliament.

Among those awaiting their fate are Bukooli Central MP Solomon Silwany, Rubanda District woman MP Prossy Akampulira Mbabazi, and Zombo Woman MP Esther Afoyochan.

As the political tussle unfolds, the NRM legislators have outlined key areas they want the next commission to address in the remaining two and a half years of the 11th Parliament
